A week and a bit redux

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Really this is meant to be ‘Two months redux’, but I still need to work out what I want to say about them, so here’s the last week instead, and hopefully we can work on getting on track, seeing as some of my adoring public are requesting updates :)

  • Played “Dominion”, and the Seaside variant. Pretty cool.
  • Finished Richard Morgan’s “Woken Furies”. I do like his stuff, but I’m reading it faster than he’s writing it…
  • 500Gb Western Digital Scorpio Blue is giving I/O errors. Fortunately looks like it may be still under warranty. Might go Samsung for a change this time though.
  • Movember morning tea raised some $100+
  • Tempura Fish and Chips in Mosman Park. Basa, white snapper, and red spot emperor. The red spot emperor seemed the favourite (IMHO as well) but of course is smaller and more expensive :)
  • Made it to team breakfast
  • Ordered some bearings for my reprap, thereby committing myself more to building one. Assuming they don’t go to Washington or Austria or something. Now all I need to do is find a source of the circuit boards who aren’t Makerbot supply constrained.
  • Buying more chook food, getting some freebie mulch, walking around Lake Monger, buying a replacement HD, getting annoyed by a JB Hi Fi salesdroid who suggested maybe I should buy something other than what I wanted.
  • Zoo visit with our generation of the family (and the next one, I guess :) Got to see the elephant (I’m assuming Tricia) get taken for a walk through the park at lunchtime, which was great
  • Astrofest at Curtin Uni. Puggle got to launch water and air rockets. Saw the Scitech guy get his arm sliced up by plastic shards when the LN2 demo exploded prematurely. Good thing he was wearing his safety goggles and didn’t get hit in the face. Don’t try this at home kids!
  • Excellent dinner at the Essex restaurant in Fremantle for our ‘kiddie dinner’ (ie no kids :) . I must remember not to order chowder, it’s rarely remarkable. The rest of the food was great. The French botrytis semillon from Saint Croix du Mont (Something de Pavillion) was astounding. Service was excellent.
  • Unfortunately Cygnet was upchucking so we didn’t get to linger over dinner and were recalled.
  • Cutting down the rat access paths to the roof. Unfortunately I think that means they’re now trapped in the roof…
  • Bunnings doesn’t look much good for Reprap parts, they either don’t deal in sizes that small or they don’t have the bits in the quantity I need, so Radio Spares it is.
  • Making lamb and spinach curry. Lacked something, not quite sure what
  • Cygnet is taking multiple steps. Bilby is playing the recorder. Puggle is playing the recorder, and is getting pretty good at associating new information with what he knows so far (frequently, in Latin :) . And both are speaking a lot of French vocab.
  • Not going to have much of a novel at the end of this NanoWriMo

The fortnight, redux

Friday, September 4th, 2009
  • Since last post, washing machine fixed, phone upgraded. Car has a leak in the roof :(
  • Yet another cold. And a possible burst eardrum?
  • 2 days of training, with a cold :(
  • Plane watching. And I see my first A380 in the flesh
  • Had a chance to watch the kids swimming
  • Saw District 9
  • A start to the week I don’t want to repeat, and the village rallying around Mikey and family
  • Couriering stuff to Becc on the way to work
  • We discovered where Henny Penny has been stockpiling her eggs
  • Too many bills, not enough liquidity. Oops! Shouldn’t have upgraded the phone :)
  • The first ducklings of the season at work
  • The chinese cabbages put forth new growth and ablate their outer leaves
  • Mulberry tree is covered in leaves and green fruit. Hopefully signs of life from the fig soon
  • A busy weekend ahead!
  • There’s no leopard like snow leopard…

The weekend, redux

Monday, August 17th, 2009
  • Took Puggle to meet a real live Astronaut, followed by fish and chips down on the foreshore in front of Steve’s, where he spotted trains going along the freeway, and pelicans cruised past in the dark
  • Took Bilby shopping, and for a babycino. She brought her bag and carried the (two items) of shopping for me!
  • Tied balloons to their backs so they could be astronauts :)
  • Went to a party, at which there was a CupCake Makerbot (it seems everyone has one but me :( )
  • Craft day, so caught up with friends, distracted kids, put a roast on and took Puggle and Bilby to the park
  • Moved the outside light switch inside, so less pfaffing around in the dark
  • Realised that we are self sufficient in eggs, tomatoes, grapefruit, lemons and chinese cabbage. Now if only we could come up with unlimited interesting recipes for this combination!
  • Bought 25kg of chook food
  • Following the broccoli, the cauliflower has gone to seed. We may have a self-sown Chinese cabbage? Also, losing the war on grass
  • Gave Cygnet some Nature time under the lemon tree

The two months, redux

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Seeing as it’s coming up on two months since my last reduxion…

  • Grubby nails garden blitz. Most thankful for all those who attended (and especially Derek and Alex for the gate hanging!)
  • Swancon, which I may cover in a separate post
  • Star Trek, also subject of a separate post.
  • Wolverine, not worthy of a separate post really…
  • Deville’s Pad, very cool. As an indicator of their clientele, they have 7 different sorts of Absinthe on tap. Not sure what their Wednesday childen’s sessions would be like though :)
  • Nick’s housewarming and some enjoyable random discussions
  • Sheldon’s X0th
  • Mikey’s bucks night. Followed by a Mother’s day during which I felt very seedy. Thanks to FoG for the lift
  • Shiny new server with G5 goodness. Blogs still go offline if I turn BOINC on though :( Unification of photos and music continuing.
  • Skip and I laid down a batch of Grolsch clone. Just got to work out when we can bottle it
  • Puggle’s birthday. He’s now getting pocket money. Unprompted, he spent it on stuff he could share with his sister. I’m so proud! Also has a bike now.
  • Bilby is talking up a storm, and developing her stubborn streak.
  • Cygnet has worked out crawling, and can now go fast. Now pulling himself up so he can creep along the furniture before running after his siblings…
  • A great turnout at the dogcow/MacGeeks dinner, with some new faces and iPhone discussion
  • No more daylight saving, at least until the Government decides to try it on us again to see if we’ve changed our minds yet
  • The grubby nails day has brought forth vegetables! Now deploying marigolds to keep some of the pests at bay hopefully.
  • We have worms too. This week, chickens!
  • Today, spent watching Puggle discovering Jellyfish in the Swan (usually by poking sticks through them). His playmate is about to head off touring around Australia for a year. Brief tour of homes of the rich and famous as we tried to work out where in Freshwater bay we were actually meant to be meeting. My old stomping grounds. Dolphins lazily cruising.

The Weekend, redux

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009
  • UCC’s Fresher Welcome, with added bonus UCC alumni Google guest
  • Nachos
  • Did some shopping in Mondo’s bulk store. Mmmm… must look up some goat curry recipes for winter
  • A chance to stop for a cup of coffee with the family
  • Prawn, mango and prosciutto kebabs.
  • Met up with a documentary film crew from the US and some other Sungroper team members to do some interviews and look at the Willetton car. The Sungroper chassis lives on, only all the other technologies bolted onto it have changed :)
  • Got a very pleasant chance for the kids to catch up with other kids whilst the adults did likewise. Looking forward to introducing them to Scrapheap Challenge

Month and a half redux

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Has been a while since the last update

  • The liberation of a beer fridge from the roadside
  • The bottling of 150ish bottles of beer.
  • Attempts to drink the same are progressing
  • Played Wasabi, and Pandemic, much fun!
  • New tyres on the battlewagon
  • Battlewagon got panelbeated after the necessary parts finally arrived
  • Watched “The Italian Job” (the original)
  • Arsonists destroyed my folks palm trees (and some other people’s cars!). This was before others of their ilk destroyed big chunks of Victoria, so barely seemed worth mentioning
  • Interment of the cat. RIP. Some new plants planted which might barely survive the summer.
  • Start of semester
  • Pancakes
  • Summer colds, blecch
  • Puggle can pretty much officially read
  • Bilby is having a language explosion and putting together longer sentences
  • Munumanup! Watching The Muppet Show with them. Do Do De Do Do.
  • Cygnet can get up on all fours, and smiles a lot
  • Finished the Adventures of Doctor Dolittle
  • Our 10 year anniversary of getting together (including 8.5 total parent years or so :)

The month, redux

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

It’s been a month since I’ve posted. A busy one :)

  • Uneasy is the tooth that bears the crown…
  • The usual pre-Christmas chaos, including lunch with Rob
  • Christmas, and much opening of presents by the kids both at home and at my folks place
  • Boxing day, catching up with friends from distant parts, then off to do much opening of presents with the kids, the cousins and the rest of the family
  • The results of which are the flu progressively working its way through everyone, leading to a quiet few days
  • Our 6th wedding anniversary, complete with a trip to watch Quantum of Solace under the stars at Camelot while Puggle and Bilby got a sleepover.
  • New Year’s Eve with a small group of friends, was good to catch up with everyone! Cooked prawns, a skill lost in time since I accompanied the family on prawning trips in the Swan in (Mon Dieu!) the late 70’s!
  • Preparing the makeshift reticulation in the vain hope it would work while we were away
  • Taking the battlewagon down to Mandurah
  • Grandad conveniently planted the crabbing meme in Puggle’s head, causing him to continually check when we were going to catch crabs (although I suspect he doesn’t actually like them :)
  • Cooked something from the Christmas present cookbook. Leftovers made good crab bait :)
  • After 10 minutes in the water, 2 crabs, probably undersized, but as I had no idea what the size was meant to be, they went back in. Puggle was happy to catch them though!
  • Lots of people catching and returning undersized crabs, which at least provided some entertainment for Puggle
  • Discovered where the fish actually are. Nowhere near the fisherfolk :)
  • Cygnet is a lot more smiley and interactive, he’s very happy
  • The return to work
  • Catching up with Jo and Martin and the boys. Puggle was distraught that we wouldn’t be seeing them again for a while.
  • Ploughed through Pinocchio in about 8 days.
  • Tomorrow, the brewing of beer

Pinocchio

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Have started reading “The Adventures of Pinocchio” to Puggle, and he is devouring it (well, as fast as I can read it to him. Sometimes I do like to read other books for myself :)

“Cri-cri-cri!”

“Who is calling me?” asked Pinocchio, greatly frightened.

“I am!”

Pinocchio turned and saw a large cricket crawling slowly up the wall.

“Tell me, Cricket, who are you?”

“I am the Talking Cricket and I have been living in this room for more than one hundred years.”

“Today, however, this room is mine,” said the Marionette, “and if you wish to do me a favor, get out now, and don’t turn around even once.”

“I refuse to leave this spot,” answered the Cricket, “until I have told you a great truth.”

“Tell it, then, and hurry.”

“Woe to boys who refuse to obey their parents and run away from home! They will never be happy in this world, and when they are older they will be very sorry for it.”

“Sing on, Cricket mine, as you please. What I know is, that tomorrow, at dawn, I leave this place forever. If I stay here the same thing will happen to me which happens to all other boys and girls. They are sent to school, and whether they want to or not, they must study. As for me, let me tell you, I hate to study! It’s much more fun, I think, to chase
after butterflies, climb trees, and steal birds’ nests.”

“Poor little silly! Don’t you know that if you go on like that, you will grow into a perfect donkey and that you’ll be the laughingstock of everyone?”

“Keep still, you ugly Cricket!” cried Pinocchio.

But the Cricket, who was a wise old philosopher, instead of being offended at Pinocchio’s impudence, continued in the same tone:

“If you do not like going to school, why don’t you at least learn a trade, so that you can earn an honest living?”

“Shall I tell you something?” asked Pinocchio, who was beginning to lose patience. “Of all the trades in the world, there is only one that really suits me.”

“And what can that be?”

“That of eating, drinking, sleeping, playing, and wandering around from morning till night.”

“Let me tell you, for your own good, Pinocchio,” said the Talking Cricket in his calm voice, “that those who follow that trade always end up in the hospital or in prison.”

“Careful, ugly Cricket! If you make me angry, you’ll be sorry!”

“Poor Pinocchio, I am sorry for you.”

“Why?”

“Because you are a Marionette and, what is much worse, you have a wooden head.”

At these last words, Pinocchio jumped up in a fury, took a hammer from the bench, and threw it with all his strength at the Talking Cricket.

Perhaps he did not think he would strike it. But, sad to relate, my dear children, he did hit the Cricket, straight on its head.

With a last weak “cri-cri-cri” the poor Cricket fell from the wall, dead!

There’s a copy online here, translated from Carlo Collodi’s Italian original by Carol Della Chiesa.

Year End Meme 2008

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

Now that it’s over and I can’t jinx it…

1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before?

Helped save a life. Met Cygnet.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Can’t remember what they were and probably.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Many people. Some closer than others :)

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Yes. One of them about one metre away. But she got better (!)

5. What countries did you visit?

This year, none other than the country of myself and family.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?

More spare time and creative impulse. A new house. Global happiness.

7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

Cygnet’s birthday. Sorry day. Obama’s election. Internet censorship protest. A random Wednesday at work.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Cygnet. Surviving 2008. Taking Puggle and Bilby for their swimming lessons. Sorting out a car.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Not Getting Things Done (TM). Not enough art, not enough writing. Disorganised home office. Slack-assed backup schedule. Not spending enough time with Bilby and Puggle and Cygnet, but better than last year I think. (Note that this year I do not have Too much TV on the list!)

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Yes.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Coffee (also the worst thing I bought), information, beer. A camera. The Battlewagon.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

My family. Those who elected Obama. Anyone doing humanitarian or volunteer work.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

The outgoing regime. Global warming deniers (looking at you, Rudd government). Internet censors (looking at you, Rudd government). So I guess that’s probably the incoming Australian regime too.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Most of it into a new car. Otherwise somewhere between electronic gadgets, food, down with the sharemarket, and the mortgage.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Cygnet. Swimming with Bilby and Puggle. Puggle reading. Bilby talking more. Cygnet smiling.

16. What song will always remind you of 2008?

Undecided, will have to check the playlist and get back to you on that.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder?

Another years worth of happy memories, so I’d have to say happier.

ii. thinner or fatter?

Thinner than last year, fatter than before Christmas.

iii. richer or poorer?

Richer.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?

Art, writing, iPhone hacking, spending time with Puggle, Bilby and Cygnet. Hedonism. Travel. Films. Outdoor cinema.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Administrivia. Organising the study. (“Watching crap TV” is not on this list this year, yay!)

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

Spent both first and second Christmas eating excessively and watching the Bilby, Puggle and Cygnet.

21. What LJ users did you meet for the first time?

This was more a Facebook year :)

22. Did you fall in love in 2008?

Yes, with Cygnet.

23. How many one-night stands?

Less than 10.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

Grand Designs. Heroes. Battlestar. Doctor Who.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?

Used car dealers. See also #13.

26. What was the best book you read?

Lets see, I read “First National Bank of Dad”, the pop-up version of “Moby Dick”, “Slaughterhouse 5″, “Newton’s Wake”, “Jagged Orbit”, “The Alchemist”, “The Other Wind”, Enid Blyton’s The Faraway and Wishing Chair books, Milly Molly Mandy, and probably some others. I think many of those are ‘best’ in different ways.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Loius Armstrong’s “Skokiaan”.

28. What did you want and get?

My family. C’est suffie.

Other than that, a new car to put them in.

29. What did you want and not get?

World peace. Everyone to be happy. Travel overseas. A new house. Solar power, greywater recycling and a permaculture garden.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

Iron Man. I think that was this year…

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Dinner with my family and folks I think. Older.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

More outdoor films. More hedonism. Sane government of Australia, the US and the rest of the world. Maybe that’s destined for 2009?

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?

Relaxed, but still not cool enough for an Australian summer. Perhaps something with inbuilt A/C?

34. What kept you sane?

Sanity is overrated. Postsecret. My family helped me get through the day though, when most of them behave.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds). Natasha. Alyson Hannigan (Willow, Buffy). Pauley Perrette (Abby, NCIS). Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck, Battlestar Galactica). This list doesn’t seem to change much from year to year.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

Australian internet censorship, Australia’s failing at setting more than 5% emission reductions.

At the end of 2006 I said: “Nice to see an increase in the amount of environmental awareness, now all that remains is to see how much of it is lip service, and how much of it is too late.” I guess we know a lot of it was lip service from the Rudd government.

37. Who did you miss?

Friends I didn’t socialise with as much as I’d like to due to other life commitments or geographical difficulties. Or the ones who didn’t make it through 2008.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Old people: schoolmates from 20 years ago.

New person: Probably random people at SF@The Pub. Didn’t meet any new people particularly, worked on attempting to spend time on existing friendships.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned

Having your heart beat and your lungs breathe is something we all take for granted, but it’s a lot of effort when you have to do it for someone else (and I wasn’t the one doing it). CPR can work. Even better if it’s backed up with O2 and a defibrillator. Make sure your first aid is current! UWA ambulance response time is >20 minutes. Blue is not a good colour on people.

Other than that, used car salesmen really can make you feel unclean.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

Politically I’m tempted to say something from The Herd’s The King Is Dead:

The dickhead dictator leader imitator
Made me feel immature when I said I hate ya
Did you read the paper the day after and hear the laughter?

However that’s not really my personal year. “Beautiful, beautiful boy” perhaps?

The Weekend, redux

Monday, December 15th, 2008
  • Upgraded some of the blogs to Wordpress 2.7, nice UI, but I think it reminds me of Typepad or something…
  • The feast of St. Lucy, and I get given freshly squeezed OJ and fruit toast in bed, constructed by Puggle and Bilby.
  • Noticed that some Transperth buses have been converted into mobile Christmas trees

    Transperth Christmas bus

    Transperth Christmas bus

  • Went to the Perth internet censorship protest. Many in the crowd looked familiar. Sadly the open mike meant there were trolls and things wandered off-topic. How appropriate for a gathering of people brought together by their love of the internet. Fortunately the 9-11 conspiracists had brought a megaphone (it still doesn’t mean they aren’t nutjobs, just that they may be organised ones). Interestingly I noticed some crossover membership with the anti-Scientology protesters in the Hay St. Mall.
  • Helped make Tapas bits and pieces to eat during a pleasant afternoon catching up with Adrian and Lin and Andrew and Kate. Wish I could find my recipe sheet…
  • A trip out to Cuddly Animal Farm with the homeschoolers was lots of fun (lots of animals to interact with, bouncy castle, tractor rides, for $10 admission fee for over 2 year olds or less if your group pre-books), despite the sweltering heat. Fortunately they had a hose spraying around
  • The Christmas tree is up, the reticulation repaired post-lawnmowing/whippersnippering, and the old fairy lights replaced with new-fangled LED fairy lights (the light is not as warm, but bright enough we probably don’t need the floodlight :)
