Somewhat old news, but since 2000 the World Bridge Federation drug tests players and will strip them of their medals if they refuse the test.

For those of you who know him, Adrian Smith is in town (ex UK and China) and is having a BBQ at his parents’ place on this Saturday 9th February at 5pm. He says to bring something to BBQ, salads are provided.

Mail me direct/comment if you need his folks’ address, and feel free to invite anyone he might know.

Scrabble videos

Friday, February 1st, 2008

As I’ve recently fallen in with the rest of you lot and started playing Scrabulous on Facebook (no doubt sealing its doom at the hands of Mattel, and thence Facebook’s), I thought I’d share some amusing Scrabble videos, namely Triple Word War and the much more risque Scrabble Rousers (love the Louis Armstrong provided soundtrack, “Skokiaan”).

R.I.P. Bobby Fischer

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

I saw in the paper that Bobby Fischer died the other day, still the holder of many chess records.

In May 1949, the six-year-old Fischer learned how to play chess from instructions found in a chess set that his sister bought at a candy store below their Brooklyn apartment.

Practice safe WoW

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

I hadn’t realised there’d been a plague in the World of Warcraft back in 2005. Probably better to die of that than the ignominity of a dirty guinea pig.

Everything I know about raising children I learnt from roleplaying

Saturday, August 4th, 2007
  • Don’t give the GM ideas. Just as you wouldn’t say “Gee, it could only get worse if the Gazebo attacked us”, you shouldn’t say “Stop waving that stick around, you might poke yourself in the eye”, because sure enough that’s what’s now going to happen as the brain subconsciously tries to follow the easily parseable part of the sentence: “poke yourself in the eye”.
  • Anything can be used as a weapon.
  • Expect the unexpected. You wouldn’t expect your 2 year old to be dancing on the dining room table.
  • You can eat anything if you’re hungry enough.
  • Don’t assume the puddle on the ground is water.
  • Split the party, you can cause more damage that way.
  • There are monsters. They do wander.
  • Better things will happen to you if you’re nice to the GM.
  • It’s fun to explore dangerous places.
  • If you aren’t afraid you can freeclimb to great heights
  • You really can lose SAN points
  • Housecats can cause significant damage if provoked.

King of Kong

Friday, July 20th, 2007

Follows a middle school science teacher as he battles a hot sauce mogul for the Guinness World Record on the arcade classic Donkey Kong.

Need I say more? Oh, check out the haircuts.
