The TiVO Cometh… to Australia

Friday, June 29th, 2007

I saw this site about TiVo coming to Australia via a Google Ad today. Woohoo! However it seems to be in partnership with Channel 7. I wonder if it will mysteriously recommend lots of shows on Channel 7, or record shows on other channels finishing about 10 minutes early :)

While nobody was watching…

we launched a scramjet (Australia’s DSTO + USAF). But I’m a bit confused about the 530km altitude claim, seems a bit high, although it’s still in the thermosphere and not high or fast enough for LEO.

The Police: Hurry up and slow down

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Does it seem odd (unfortunately the picture of the car only seems to be in Saturday’s West) that the police are advertising their anti-speeding campaign using a “one-off special purpose Ford Falcon XR-6 Turbo”? Perhaps they could use a Prius instead?

From their PDF Media release

“Bionic” Addition To Traffic Enforcement
Two new weapons in the war against the road toll are designed to have a highly visible impact on road traffic law enforcement.
A high tech, high-performance Highway Patrol car is the latest addition to the Police Traffic Enforcement Group.
It is a one-off special purpose Ford Falcon XR-6 Turbo with specially designed reflective markings contrasting with a spectacular “Bionic Blue” paint job, and an experimental new flashing light bar on the roof.
The other initiative is a more driver friendly approach to the use of speed cameras.

Information

Unhappiness in relationships, according to Dr. Gary Chapman, is often due to the fact that we speak different love languages. Sometimes we don’t understand our partner’s requirements, or even our own. We all have a “love tank” that needs to be filled in order for us to express love to others, but there are different means by which our tank can be filled, and there are different ways that we can express love to others.

Sir Salman Rushdie…

still pretty unpopular in some parts of the world. Along with Britain, now that they’ve decided to knight him. But at least Iran sends him a card every year.

A random walk through China

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

In the first 5 months of 2007, 5 times as many Chinese investors entered the stockmarket as during all of 2006 (undaunted by a tripling of the stamp duty). Probably what this means is that the world financial market is now going to depend largely on numerology and superstition! Of course that really isn’t any different from what it does at the moment, just that it will be eastern numerology and superstition :)
