Strawberries with Pimms

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

I was watching Jamie Oliver’s latest show “Jamie at Home”, and he made a fab looking dessert. He takes a tray, covers it with hulled strawberries (cut side down), then makes a sauce with seeds scraped from a vanilla pod and a few tablespoons of the syrup from a bottle of ginger in syrup. The source gets poured over the strawberries. Then he cuts up two lumps of syrup ginger into pieces and puts them in randomly with the strawberries. After a few minutes of grilling it comes out, and he pours Pimms (a strange UK alcohol) over the top. Add a scoop of vanilla icecream to let it melt into the hot strawberries for a bit.

Then he plates up with some icecream, strawberries and sauce, and a pile of shortbread biscuits that he’s smashed up, with a mint sprig to set it all off.

Now I guess I’ll have to find some Pimms.

Some days the earth might just open up and swallow you into a giant sinkhole. 2 people are dead and others missing. Thanks to Skippy for this one.

Public service announcement: Cross behind the bus

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

I thought it was drummed into most kids when they were young that you should always cross behind the bus. That way you won’t a) Step out in front of motorists driving past the bus, incurring their wrath, or b) Get run over by the bus driver unless they are forced to wait for you, thereby incurring the wrath of your fellow bus passengers.

This goes doubly for you if you’re at what’s left of the ECU campus in Churchlands, I’d hope you’d know better by now.

Quick-release cable ties?

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

Anyone know where I can buy quick-release cable ties? I used my last one to secure the TV from from the inquisitive Puggle, and now I’m using the non-quick-release ones which, whilst readily available, usually requires slicing them open with my Leatherman in order to watch TV. They’ve got a larger tang that you can use to hold the ratchet foot out of the way whilst you open them up.

Because it doesn’t know the words…

How much meat in half a pig?

Friday, February 16th, 2007

In case you’re provisioning your global warming shelter with salt pork, or perhaps more mundanely stocking your deep freeze, here’s a run down on how much meat you can get out of half a pig. Note that it’s a US site so weights, cuts, etc. may vary.

Now, I wonder how much you can get out of an Arcturan megacow?
