Days of Beer and Curries

Saturday, December 16th, 2006

Today (well, now yesterday) featured a liquid lunch with a friend (now) from interstate, followed by an impromptu work planning session at UniClub, the weekly debrief over a beer with the Skipmeister and then home for a curry for dinner from one of the 3 proximate Indian restaurants, being the Anghiti, Punjab or Agni (make sure you know which one your order was placed with before you go to pick it up, especially as they won’t be able to spell your surname anyway! Not that this is in any way limited to Indian restaurants :).

After dinner it was time to fall asleep on the couch, to wake up realising that I’d only managed one coffee for the day, which might have also explained the horizontalness.

Thrown into the mix was the odd cricket score and the almost unpleasantly warm weather, making the day seem somewhat charmingly colonial somehow :)

Miss Potter

Thursday, December 14th, 2006

There’s a biopic “Miss Potter” coming out about Beatrix Potter, of “Peter Rabbit” fame. Stars Renée Zellweger and Ewan McGregor
I have a great deal of respect for someone who can work the word “soporific” (and many other less common ones) into a children’s book :) Although The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin (available with illustrations from Project Gutenberg) and the sacrifices to the Owl (amongst other things) is kind of worrying.

It’s just not cricket

Wednesday, December 13th, 2006

There’s a cricket exhibition on at the WA Museum at the moment (including The Ashes Urn). One of my cow-orkers remarked that he’d heard on radio that overarm bowling came about because underarm bowling wasn’t practical if you were wearing a hoop skirt!

It appears the Wikipedia covers every English cricket season from 1726 onwards!

Decadence

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

Caught the tail end of the new SBS series about Decadence on Wednesday night.

One stat they quoted was that 50% of households earning over $70,000/year feel that they cannot afford everything they need. And if you can’t afford what you need, the solution is to get credit (which used to be called debt :).

Next Wednesday at 9pm the episode is on Sex :)
