Microsoft releases Western Australia Daylight Saving patches

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

Given the number of people Googling my blog today looking for daylight savings stuff I thought the users of evil Microsoft products might like to know that Microsoft has released patches for West Australian daylight savings time.

Japanese cars safer than American ones

Thursday, November 23rd, 2006

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) second annual survey of car safety showed that Japanese brands were ahead of US manufactured ones because the US models lack electronic stability control:

a system that brakes or reduces engine power to help correct improper steering, could prevent nearly a third of all fatal crashes and reduce the risk of rolling over by as much as 80 percent, the IIHS said.

A few weeks ago I read an interview in The West’s motoring section with a motor company rep who said that whilst many people took up the ’sports pack’ extra, nobody had actually opted to spend money on the ’safety pack’ which included airbags and other active safety measures.

No Socks please, We’re British.

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

We were having a discussion the other day about the art of sock knitting (the three needle sort was practiced by my grandmother), and how it’s being revived. Now I discover there were Sock machines.

Daylight Savings is here for Western Australia

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

So, our mighty leaders have decided that Western Australia should have Daylight Saving.

This gives all the people responsible for maintaining the computer equipment that keeps the state running 11 days to get or construct software patches, test and apply them. Yay!

Really, WA’s climate would seem to indicate we should be having nighttime saving, shifting to enjoy more of the cool dark and less of the cancer inducing sunshine and heat of global warming. Or maybe we’ll all just crank up the airconditioners powered by those 25 nuclear power plants we may be going to get.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, seeing as no-one seems to be mentioning it, daylight savings is being trialled for 3 years and (according to this summary memorandum about the bill) ends on the last Sunday of March (March 25th 2007). This year (2006) it commences on December 3rd and in 2007 and 2008 it will commence on the last Sunday in October. I take no responsibility for the accuracy of this information of course :)

That’s Supreme Emperor to you…

Monday, November 20th, 2006

You are The Emperor

Stability, power, protection, realization; a great person.

The Emperor is the great authority figure of the Tarot, so it represents
fathers, father-figures and employers. There is a lot of aggression and violence
too.

The Emperor naturally follows the Empress. Like an infant, he is filled with enthuiasm, energy, aggression. He is direct, guileless and all too often irresistible. Unfortunately, like a baby he can also be a tyrant. Impatient, demanding, controlling. In the best of circumstances, he signifies the leader that everyone wants to follow, sitting on a throne that indicates the solid foundation of an Empire he created, loves and rules with intelligence and enthusiasm. But that throne can also be a trap, a responsibility that has the Emperor feeling restless, bored and discontent.

What Tarot Card are You?
Take the Test to Find Out.

It’s not me, it’s you, Google.

Google seems to keep putting ads involving “No Self Esteem” on my site (despite me not having mentioned it, as far as I can recall). I’m wondering if it thinks I’ve got low self esteem, I write like someone who has it, or whether it thinks my readers have low self esteem. Or perhaps our self esteem is too high and needs to be lowered?

Shakespeare at Sea

Friday, November 17th, 2006

The Geek Cruises people are running a Shakespeare cruise (concurrently with their MacGeek cruise :). Or there’s Chess or Opera if you’d prefer.

Where was I?

Friday, November 17th, 2006

I hate it when it takes me so long to get into my blog (full hard drives, small children) that I forget what I was going to write.

While I’m here, tip for the day: Don’t spread the syrup from your gulab jamuns all over the kitchen floor. Untried ObRecipe here: Gulab Jamun Recipe: Milkballs in Sweet Syrup

Drawn To Women… and Puddings

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Come up to the Art Gallery of WA and see Norman Lindsay’s Etchings, seemingly predominantly of naked women (he learnt to draw the human form from his father’s anatomy texts).

Amongst other things Norman was famous for his story The Magic Pudding (which Phillip Pullman says is “Without question my favourite children’s book”)

“Drawn To Women” runs until 14th January.

Jack and Bobby

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

Felt strangely compelled to watch Jack and Bobby this evening on the ABC. One season only before it got canned, but executive produced by Thomas Schlamme of The West Wing fame.
